When replacing the front hand guard of the m1 garand, the accepted way of removing the hand guard liner and Hg ferral is to  bend the tabs of the liner at the Hg ferral inward  With the point of a small screwdriver, then remove the liner from the rear with a pair of pliers  

Then remove the Hg ferral from the old Hg   

And Install the Hg ferral on the new Hg and insert the Hg liner

Using a pair of pliers squeeze the labs back out to the edge of the ferral. Insert the rear tool into the Hg against the liner

And place on bench

Now insert the front tool into the liner thru the ferral

With a small gunsmith hammer tap the front tool down until the ears are secure against the ferral   

And the tabs of the liner are firm against the Hg at the rear  

Now the job is done.
